but men spoke from God, being borne onby theHoly Spirit.

NOTE: 2 Peter chapter one has been a favorite of mine for many a year. Two things especially stand out for me in this chapter – first the seven things to add to our faith from Knowledge to Love – and secondly Peter’s emphasis again and again on “These Things”, referring back to these seven things.

If one wants to understand the heart of the apostle Peter, probably this one chapter reveals it more perfectly than any other portion of Scripture.

And remember – though his disciple Mark wrote the Gospel named after him – yet because Peter mentored him after the break-up of Barnabas and Paul – this Gospel probably reflects the thinking of Peter as much as it does that of Mark.

If a person is looking for one significant chapter of the Bible to memorize – this could be the one! It has a wealth and a depth about it that cannot easily be dismissed.

Note also that we have linked it with the tribe of Simeon and the “Gift of the Holy Spirit.” Remember that Simeon means “Hearing,” which reminds one of the Holy Spirit, who like Jesus spoke only the word of His Father; so the Holy Spirit perfectly represented Jesus in like manner. He did notspeak from Himself. As the Comforter replaced Jesus when He returned to the Father, then the Spirit faithfully represented Him.

The Greek words for “faith” and “love” are used in a number of other natural Bible Series of 9 words or less in the New Testament. It is our goal to do a 7-reference study on each of these 14 New Testament series. Close to 100 words are involved in these series. To take seven references from Englishman’s Greek New Testament Concordance, seems to give the heart of the meaning of each word, no matter which 7 references are selected.

I often say that a Greek Word Study that establishes a true definition for that word is like a “Rifle Shot.” It will bring down a deer. But the Interlinear Numeric Outlined New Testament and the corresponding Outlines are like a “Buckshot blast.” It brings down a duck or goose. We need both. We need accurate definitions, but we also need an accurate understanding of the context for each Bible book. It has been said, “A text without a “context” is a pretext!”

2 Peter chapter one is an admirable example of both these methods of Bible Study. – J.A.W.
